How structural wood gave new life to the Holy Cross Church
We had the unique opportunity to give the Holy Cross Church in Boekhoute a second life. What was once a religious space is now a multifunctional meeting place for childcare, events, and exhibitions. Our contribution? The elegant interplay of structural wood, including Glulam, LVL, OSB, and SLS.
Why Choose Structural Wood?
These high-quality wood types play a crucial role in reinforcing existing structures, as seen in the Holy Cross Church. With impressive dimensional stability and lightweight properties, they surpass traditional materials like steel or concrete. That’s why structural wood is a safe choice for both new builds and renovation projects.

Glulam: Robust Load-Bearing Structures
Glulam, short for “Glued Laminated Timber,” is laminated wood ideal for load-bearing constructions. With strength classes ranging from BS11 (GL24) to BS16 (GL32), this wood is a reliable choice for both large and small projects, including industrial, commercial, residential buildings, renovations, and even roof structures.
During the renovation of the Holy Cross Church, Glulam played a pivotal role. In addition to adding extra strength, it brought warmth and coziness to the space.
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL): Strong and Dimensionally Stable
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is a laminated veneer wood ideal for both structural and visible applications in new builds and renovations. It’s not only strong but also highly dimensionally stable, with minimal shrinkage.
In addition to roof components like beams, trusses, or rafters, professionals often turn to LVL for other uses such as bleachers, stairs, or framing.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB): Versatile Interior Woodwork
OSB is one of the most popular wood types for interior carpentry. This eco-friendly wood owes its popularity to its strong mechanical properties. Whether you need a reliable load-bearing structure or a sleek finish for floors and roofs, OSB panels are incredibly versatile.
Its greatest advantage? It performs well in all conditions, whether dry or humid—making it a perfect choice even for the church renovation.
Scandinavian Lumber Standard (SLS): Strength and Aesthetics Combined
SLS, or “Scandinavian Lumber Standard,” is high-quality planed spruce that meets the strictest standards. It’s an excellent choice for timber frame construction and other modern builds.
In addition to its strength, SLS offers aesthetic value with rounded edges and a streamlined finish. With SLS, the church became not only a functional structure but also an architectural masterpiece.
