Nemesu

Nemesu 01
Nemesu 02

Nemesu (Shorea pauciflora) is a high‑grade variant of Dark Red Meranti, sourced from Southeast Asia — particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, Sabah and Sarawak. Known as the heaviest and most durable of all Meranti species, it is often referred to as the “king of the Merantis”.

Its deep red to reddish‑brown colour, excellent dimensional stability and strong mechanical performance make Nemesu a popular timber for interior and exterior joinery, façade applications and structural elements.

  • Qualities

Nemesu belongs to the Dark Red Meranti group (Shorea spp.) and is characterised by:

    • Colour: dark red to reddish‑brown, occasionally with purplish tones
    • Texture: moderately coarse grain with occasional interlocked grain
    • Density: one of the heaviest Meranti types (SG ±0.68 / ±680 kg/m³)
    • Workability: surprisingly good despite its density; pre‑drilling recommended
    • Performance: suitable for structural joinery and intensive use
    • Durability: heartwood classified as EN 350 class 2, suitable for protected exterior environments
  • Applications

Nemesu is suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Sources confirm its use in joinery, cladding and structural applications.

    Exterior Applications

    • Exterior joinery (windows, doors, frames)
    • Façade cladding & profile boards
    • Exterior trim & structural timber
    • Canopies, pergolas & light outdoor structures

    Interior Applications

    • Stairs & interior joinery
    • Furniture & interior panelling
    • Plywood / veneer production (industry‑standard use)
    • Decorative panels & finishing profiles

Nemesu is recognised as one of the most dimensionally stable and durable Meranti variants, with higher density than standard Dark Red Meranti.

  • Technical specifications

    Durability Class (Use Class)

    • Class 2 — suitable for use indoors or under cover
(Confirmed for Dark Red Meranti spp.)

    Workability

    • Good machining behaviour
    • Pre‑drilling recommended
    • Interlocked grain → slight risk of tear‑out

    Colour

    • Red to dark red, sometimes with purplish tones
(“dark red to purplish brown” per Tropix)

    Density

    • Approx. 680 kg/m³ @ 12% MC
      (Specific gravity 0.68)

    Shrinkage

    • Radial: 4.0%
    • Tangential: 7.6%

    Dimensional Stability

    • Good stability; slight risk of distortion during drying
(common for Meranti with interlocked grain)

    Durability (Fungi / Biological Agents)

    • Durability varies from class 2–4 depending on species and density
    • Nemesu itself is positioned at class 2

    General Workability

    • Easy to saw, plane and finish
    • Light cross‑grain can require lower cutting angles
